A career as a Medical Laboratory Technician?

Is there anybody on RFD or knows a person who is a Medical Laboratory Technician? I find that particular field interesting but I'm having trouble finding out more information about it in terms of future job prospects, job satisfaction etc.

Any help would be great.

Have you seen the Med Lab Tech thread in the Student forum? I think that should provide you with a lot of info.

Technician and Technologist are different.

I'm going to assume most people want to be a technologist due to the higher pay.

What do you want to know?

In general, this is a profession where the average age of the current empolyees is around 50. There is and will be a demand for qualified MLTs.

As for the job, it will depend on your institution. Some will have rotations where you will deal with the less than desireable benches (i.e. fecal); others will maintain specialization.

Now, there is a change occuring. Many of the hospitals are moving towards automation. 5 years ago, a site like Toronto East or Brantford would never have thought about lab or total lab automation...but today they are...

A MLT that is comfortable with computers...a big bonus. Most of our hiring is of MLTs that have laboratory experience. Due to market trends, we actually are having challenges hiring to the corporate world....for the first time ever....

I just wanted to know more about the profession in general.

For instance, I didn't know there was a difference between Technician and Technologist until I read the thread in the Careers section of the forums. I was on the verge of applying to Centennial but that is definitely not an option any longer.

I have a Chemical Engineering Technology advanced diploma from Seneca and worked in a R&D lab for a chemical manufacturer so I do have laboratory experience, though from a chemical research perspective. I enjoy the lab work which is why I was looking into MLT.

Basically I'm pretty much left with Michener as my only option in schooling which poses a problem if their admissions requirements are any indication. Would Michener look at College grades besides High School grades? My High School grades were terrible, but my College grades was an overall A.

In regards to being comfortable with Computers, I was actually hoping to find out if there were specializations within the MLT field related to Computers since I've always been comfortable with computers.
